Di Matteo wants Top Four

Roberto Di Matteo stepped into the breach at Stamford Bridge fully aware of the volatility that characterises one of the most demanding managerial posts in European football. There are few clubs and owners who are more exacting of their managers and their quest for success. Like Inter Milan, whose sacking of Claudio Ranieri, and Real Madrid, whose unjust dismissal of multiple title-winning coach Vicente del Bosque and Fabio Capello (the latter twice, each time after winning the league), Roman Abramovich wants to score goals, win games and win trophies, now.

To some extent, perhaps, Chelsea have been spoilt by the success they enjoyed with Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho at the helm. The "Special One", as he called himself, won back-to-back Premier League titles in 2004/05 and 2005/06, as well as the FA Cup in 2006, the League Cup in 2004 and 2006 and the Community Shield in 2005. Since then, the Blues have won the league just once (in 2009/10 under Carlo Ancelotti; they finished second in 2006/07, 2007/08 and 2010/11) and the FA Cup in 2008 and 2009 - three trophies in six years - certainly not good enough for Abramovich, who went through six managers after Mourinho left.

The most recent to feel Abramovich's wrath was Mourinho's compatriot, Andre Villas-Boas who lasted only eight months. His replacement, Italian Roberto Di Matteo, however, seems to be enjoying a happier time at the helm. According to a report in The Sun, Di Matteo has come out and set ambitious goals for himself and the club, before they begin to adjudge the season (or at least his tenure) a success.

"I'm working my socks off to help this team become successful. But so far we have not proved anything and we have not achieved anything. The players have done extremely well to turn things around but it will only be a successful season if we finish in the top four and win a trophy. We have to ensure we finish well to guarantee Champions League football for next season. That's the big target," the 41 year old former Chelsea player said.

Despite Di Matteo's caution, it cannot be denied he has played an instrumental role in reviving the club's season and injecting confidence and belief into the players, particularly the senior members of the squad, with whom it was reported Villas-Boas fell out. In fact, a BBC report has his former team mate, Norwegian forward Tore Andre Flo, calling for Di Matteo to be recognised as the fans' choice to be made Chelsea manager on a permanent basis.

"The supporters would like it," Flo said, adding, "I think he would take the job. I think also that a lot of people would like him to do that. It would be very welcome among the fans."

The question whether Di Matteo will be given the job for next year as well will depend on precisely the same target he himself has outlined - a top-four finish to ensure Champions League football next season. The FA Cup will be welcome but Abramovich will be more concerned about the possibility of missing the Champions League and the revenue it brings. The Champions League, it is no secret, is Abramovich's Holy Grail. The Blues, despite having never won the tournament, have an impressive pedigree in the tournament, having reached the semi-finals more often than not in recent times and the finals, once, in 2007/08.

The fact that Di Matteo has guided the club into the last four, for the first time since the 2008/09 season, is another point in his favour. The fact the club came through after overturning a 1-3 deficit against Napoli, in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie, and beat Benfica, both home and away, to set up a clash with defending champions Barcelona is another. There may not be too many people who think the Blues can beat the Catalans; Mourinho certainly does not. However, should Chelsea somehow manage to scrape past, the one-off game with either Real Madrid (led by Mourinho) or Bayern Munich is one in which anything can happen. It would be a remarkable end to a turbulent season and the absolutely best reason Di Matteo can give his boss to retain his services, if, in the space of a few months, he managed to win the one trophy. ibra's grumble and messi's record

It was not a spectacular night of football like Barca's 7-1 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen in the last round where Lionel Messi bagged a record five goals. The quarter-final tie was effectively decided by two first-half penalties converted by Messi, which saw him move on to 51 Champions League goals and at just 24 is the youngest to break the 50 landmark. Messi also broke the record for goals scored in a Champions League campaign, his two goals on the night bringing his tally to 14 and breaking the previous total held by himself and Ruud van Nistelrooy of 12. But AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic sparked controversy after his side's Champions League elimination by Barcelona suggesting the holders receive a helping hand from referees at the Camp Nou. Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho says it is impossible to beat Barca at the Camp Nou and an angry Ibrahimovic, who spent a disappointing season with Barca during the 2009-10 campaign, claimed the same after the 3-1 defeat on Tuesday which followed a 0-0 draw at the San Siro in the first leg.

Barca controlled the opening stages of the game and took the lead after a series of errors from Milan. Massimo Ambrosini was dispossessed in midfield by Messi who tore into the area and then appeared to make the wrong decision in playing the ball back to Xavi. Full-back Luca Antonini dispossessed the Spain international but then went through the back of Messi and the referee awarded the penalty which the Argentine despatched into the corner. Milan equalised through Antonio Nocerino but then came the controversial penalty decision with the shirt tug by Nesta on Busquets as a corner was being delivered. Messi stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way from 12 yards and then at the start of the second half Andres Iniesta put the game beyond Milan. (http://sports.ndtv.com)

While the debate rages around him as to whether he should be considered one of the greatest, if not the greatest, player of all time, Messi continues to notch up goals at a dizzying rate. With two months of the season left to play, he has already amassed 58 goals in all competitions. In stark contrast, his former team mate at Barcelona, Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had been touted as the main threat to Barca's progress on Tuesday, was left ranting about the referee. The Milan players were fuming over Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers decision to penalise Alessandro Nesta for pulling Sergio Busquets's shirt at a corner for the second penalty. Club origin city Cluj-Napoca is the most surprising team in the Champions League this time after the bend to U.S. Roman 2-1, and reach a point of the season and finalists Chelsea.

Results apart from the appearance of the players also attributed to the strategy right from Trombetta. The manager who only play in Serie A during two seasons that valuable lessons in the field of Francesco Guidolin to become assistants at the time Udinese and Bologna.

When Cluj continue to be able to reach a number in the next MatchDay, then stay waiting time when the team was broken into after andalannya players and the manager also purchased by other European big clubs.

In addition, the performance of the team is only limited in the scope of Belarus with a league champion as much as 4 times.

In the Champions League first season, yellow, blue team together to complete the Fire group, which also consists of Juventus, Real Madrid, and other team debutan Zenit St. Petersburg.

Rather than direct diver placed a lock, even BATE successfully seize a number of Juventus though less from Madrid. It seems children Viktor Goncharenko is better to try to survive in the third position to be able to pass to stage UEFA Cup.

In addition to achievements in the field, Zenit also estimated to be automatically done more with the financial support from Gazprom in Russia's largest company, which is also the owner of Zenit.

Advocaat of course, must be specially targeted, and at least 16 large position in the second innings when the group ended. That means the Zenit must remove one of Madrid or the Bianconeri. Not an easy task, of course.

But if Juventus see down of appearance in the domestic and Europe this time, not the second position may not be achieved. Moreover, when Andrei Arshavin still play for Zenit and the club rejected a bid from England, Spain, and Italy who want to buy.
